 Hands
of cured tobacco of different grade, quality, and color
are blended manually. Then a tipping machine separates
the top of the leaf, called the tip, from the lower leaf
and stem, called the butt.
The tips and butts pass over vibratory sieves to remove
sand.
To open the leaves, the tobacco receives its first
steam treatment in an ordering cylinder. It is transferred
to wide picking belts for manual removal of foreign
particles and bad or off-spec tobacco.
The tips move on to the strip silos. The butts receive
a second dose of steam and water in a reordering cylinder.
Now they are ready for the threshing process, which
removes the leaf from the stem.
