Green leaf tobacco is so called because it is new and fresh. Its color varies from golden yellow to dark brown.

The tobacco arrives in farmers’ bales consisting of tightly packed bunches of leaves, called hands.

At this stage the moisture content varies between 13 and 18%, and the stems have not sufficiently dried. The tobacco contains a number of foreign bodies, such as metal, stones, sand, and feathers.
