Explosibility of solids (dusts)
To characterize the explosion hazard, explosibility must first be established. This is carried out according to VDI 2263, Sheet 1 in the modified Hartmann tube and, for low-flammability dusts, in a closed system (20 l sphere). Only by means of tests in a closed system (CEN standard) the dust explosion constants, such as lower explosive limit, KSt and pmax, and therefore the dust explosion class can be determined. The ignitability of a dust is described by the minimum ignition energy. The properties mentioned are highly dependent on particle size. The autoignition temperature of powder substances is a function of the amount of heaped material. Wire mesh basket tests (e.g. 1 l) are necessary to determine the permissible limit temperature. The Grewer oven (V=8 cm3) is used for the screening test. To assess the risk of electrostatic discharges when dusts and liquids are handled, it is important to know the electrical conductivity.
