Chemical reactions
To determine the hazard potential of chemical reactions, reaction calorimeters are available that cover a wide temperature and pressure range: -20°C < T < 200°C, 0 bar < p < 60 bar. Adiabatic reactions in autoclaves permit measurements at even higher temperatures and pressures. Limit values for safe operation are derived from the reaction enthalpy, the gas formation and the heat production rate. The analysis of critical operating conditions - in the event of departure from normal operation - requires further reaction tests and testing for thermal stability. With a kinetic model adapted to the experimental data the operational procedure for different boundary conditions can be simulated for the desired reaction and for any secondary reactions.
