New drive reduces life cycle costs
Cool, safe, practical
The new Sinamics G120 frequency converter series sets new standards in drives for low voltage motors. Power modules with different voltage levels support not only the Namur-compatible Profidrive protocol for the chemical industry and offer this variety of Safety Integrated functions as the only provider. The other properties of the devices contribute to unearthing valuable potential for cost reduction for machine manufacturers and in the production and process industry.

Great emphasis has been placed in the conception of the modular device series on simple handling in all phases of utilization, on flexible application possibilities and on a very robust, long lasting hardware. A compact fan provides them with cooling air. The heat of the electronics in the power module is completely dissipated via the heat sink. The electrical interference immunity has been further improved by lengthening the air and creep distances. The G120 has boards with a protective coating on both sides to protect them against conductive particles.

Modular by eye

Power Module and Control Unit are separate modules in the G120 which can be assembled in tailor-made drive solutions and changed easily for maintenance and service ("hot swappable"). The control units are offered in versions with a lot or a few I/O terminals, with or without integrated pulse encoder evaluation, with different communication interfaces and in versions with or without Safety Integrated. The power modules are initially available for voltage ranges between 380 and 480 V and for 690 V.

Integrated safety functions

Functional highlight of the Sinamics G120 drive series are the integrated safety functions. Safety functions are integrated directly in the drive in the G120: The "safely switched off torque", the "safe stop 1" and the "safely limited speed" as well as the "safe brake control" (SIL 2 in accordance with IEC 61508, category 3 in accordance with EN 954-1).

With the Safe Torque Off (STO), the drive torque is safely set to zero and accidental start-up of the motor prevented by safe pulse quenching. Safe Stop 1 (SS1) ensures fast and controlled stopping of the motor. This prevents unwanted re-acceleration of the motor. The Safely Limited Speed (SLS) safely limits the speed of the motor to a given maximum value. A minimum speed can be monitored additionally. The motor is safely switched off immediately on leaving the permissible speed range. The G120 controls these integrated safety functions both with an encoder and an encoderless vector regulation.

Even without fundamental changes to the automation concept, the possibility of retrofitting safe set-up functions or similar features is always open when using the G120. It suffices to configure the fail-safe variant of the control unit to change over from the standard to the safety version. The G120 power modules remain the same.

Feedback capability

The PM 250 with the capability of line-commutated energy feedback is now being presented at the SPS/IPC/Drives. Apart from the high energy saving, it also enables braking without pulse resistance and network commutation choke.

Life cycle costs minimized

With the introduction of the G120, the demand to provide a technically and economically optimum solution for every user is met better than ever before by the Sinamics family. Functional modularity, simple handling in engineering, repair and service, robustness of the electronics and cooling and last but not least, the extensive, future-safe equipment with drive-based safety functions and feedback capability promote efficiency in mechanical engineering and promise the end user a long, trouble-free operating life.
