Aggressive atmospheres, frequent risk of explosion and extreme temperatures as well as the highest safety standards are all common challenges which must be surmounted in the provision of drive solutions for the chemical industry. Motors and converters being used in this industrial branch must fully meet all the requirements which result from these conditions and demands whilst also providing maximum reliability in order to protect people, machines and the environment.
Our drive systems are designed to fully meet the requirements of the chemical industry. They play a key role in providing the highest levels of pump, fan, compressor, mixer and extruder availability and efficiency which all maintain the continuation of processes. The main attributes of our solutions for the chemical industry are: unbeatable reliability, long periods between servicing, short repair times, flexible adaptation to all possible processes, the simple changing of parameters and high unit durability, which coincides perfectly with a system run-time of more than twenty years as well as with the safety measures required due to the aggressive substances in use and the frequent risk of explosion.
These motors are not only particularly robust and reliable but also available with every degree of explosion protection: Ex n, Ex e, Ex d and Ex p and, for unusual requirements, double gas/dust protection or Ex e and Ex d. In addition to this, further features for protection against aggressive atmospheres are also available. These include chemical-resistant paint finishes and galvanised fan covers and a wide range of operating temperatures which, like all degrees of protection up to IP67, allow the motors to be used in extreme conditions. Together with Loher motors such as CHEMSTAR and VARIO, Siemens offers a unique motor range which is perfectly suited to the demands of the chemical industry. For example, we offer both standard and explosion-proof motors (according to power rating, also available in a VIK version) with power ratings ranging from just a few kilowatts up to 100 megawatts, which can be tailor-made to meet the customer’s precise requirements. Finally, it almost goes without saying that industry-specific certificates such as ATEX, NEPSI (China) and Rostekhnadzor (Russia) are available.
With our frequency converter ranges, SINAMICS and DYNAVERT, we are able to meet all the demands of the chemical industry: LC output filters and dv/dt filters for the limitation of maximum output voltages and voltage increases, analyses of motor temperatures for integrated motor protection, the option of unshielded motor cables of up to 300m in length for motors in environments at risk of explosion, safe electrical separation in accordance with the PELV Standard and, in the german-speaking trading area, in accordance with the NAMUR recommendation NE37/38. Our converters are also equipped with NAMUR functionalities and NAMUR terminal blocks. Operation using the PROFIBUS profile Profidrive 4.0, process technology operating mode. Developed especially for the chemical and petrochemical industries, the Loher DYNAVERT T converter, intended for use with zone 1, ATEX-certified, explosion-proof motors and thermal motor protection, can be produced with a PTC sensor analysis.
It is often beneficial to use a frequency converter with the pumps or compressor drives frequently required in the chemical industry. In such instances, variable-speed operation (in comparison with a mechanical control system) can save up to 50% of energy and, in some cases, up to 70%, which makes processes more flexible but also accurate at shorter reaction times. Smooth starting and stopping protects the mechanics of the entire system; surges in the piping system are a thing of the past. Undesirable operational conditions such as cavitation bubbles which persistently corrode the pump buckets or supersonic compression surges are avoided. In general, the cost of purchasing of a frequency converter has often been made back within a few months. The saving potential and amortisation period of such an investment can be calculated quickly and easily using the energy-saving program, SinaSave.
