Electronic eye supports air traffic control

In fog and snowstorms, it is impossible to observe the movements of planes and vehicles on taxi ways and aprons, even from the tallest control tower. Air traffic control at Munich Airport has recently prepared for such eventualities with a special "electronic eye". In poor visibility, this new visualization system based on Simatic WinCC facilitates the detailed observation and targeted operation of all lighting systems for the runways as well as the adjacent taxiways. Thanks to the induction loops set into the taxiways, identification and display of objects located on the taxiways is possible – an indispensable prerequisite for the establishment of a capacity-oriented taxi management system.
