IC3- Internet Command, Control & Communication
for SIMATIC S7 installations

Karlsruhe University
of Applied Sciences

Project manager:

Prof. Dr. Peter A. Henning MediaLab
Prof.Dr.Karl-Heinz Meisel,
Labor für Automatisierungstechnik

Project concept:

  • Programming via the Internet
    latest protocols
  • Feedback by integration of the state-of-the-art media techniques
    compression
  • Security concepts
    cryptography
  • With strong industrial partners

The IC3 project in the university

As part of the students’ project work, they carry out remote diagnosis, remote maintenance and remote programming of SIMATIC-S7 controllers via the Internet. The integration of automation, multimedia (audio/video technology) and Internet technology permits innovative concepts to be developed, which point the way forward.

The project covers
  • Communication via the Intranet/Internet, testing of new protocols (RTP)
  • Concepts for multi-user operations
  • Evaluation of the possibilities and limits of remote programming and remote operation
  • Solutions for data and access security
  • Visual feedback via WebCam and virtual reality models of the installation
  • Technical implementation, using when possible the Java Media API Suite

The IC3 project in the industrial environment

Remote diagnosis, remote maintenance and remote programming are carried out via the Internet for SIMATIC-S7-300 controllers on CD production facilities belonging to STEAG HamaTech AG. This innovative concept makes significant time and cost savings, particularly because a large proportion of the facilities are installed in South East Asia, and until now it has always been necessary for a maintenance technician to drive to the plant when a malfunction occurs.

The project covers
  • Communication via the Internet, via ISDN or analog telephone lines.
  • Investigation of the suitability of existing hardware and software components (e.g. remote maintenance modem & teleservice adapter).
  • Evaluation of the possibilities and limits of remote programming and remote operation
  • Concepts for personnel deployment, data and access security
  • Visual feedback via WebCam and virtual reality models of the installation
  • Additional integration of media, e.g. using IP telephony.
