| Engineering communications across all boundaries: SIMATIC iMap SIMATIC iMap is the new engineering tool for Component Based Automation. It permits plant-wide, cross-vendor integration of distributed applications. It also eliminates the time-consuming programming of the communications links between intelligent devices - and it considerably reduces the engineering cost for the user. The first truly open engineering software The SIMATIC iMap software comes from the Totally Integrated Automation spectrum and follows a crossvendor approach: with this first truly open engineering software, you can now integrate intelligent devices from different vendors into Totally Integrated Automation. SIMATIC iMap uses standard mechanisms like OPC, XML, and ActiveX. Configuring instead of programming You import the already created software components into SIMATIC iMap and store them in a library. Via the open interface of SIMATIC iMap, you can interconnect components for all PROFINET-compatible devices as library elements. Draw the interconnecting lines - and you're done The project engineer can drag-anddrop these components onto the wiring diagram, where they are shown with their technological interfaces. The inputs and outputs of the components just have to be interconnected with one another by drawing lines between them - and all of the required communications relationships are established. Components are represented in the wiring diagram independent of the bus system so that the project engineer can concentrate purely on the technological process. In addition to the data for the communication connections, the engineering tool also generates the data for access from visualization systems or standard IT applications. In the SIMATIC iMap network view, the devices are connected with their specific bus systems. The communication connections are activated in the individual automation and field devices by download from SIMATIC iMap into each intelligent target device. ![]() Please click the picture to blow up! The connection to the visualization component is also already integrated HMI stations can also be integrated in the project in SIMATIC iMap using drag-and-drop so that all additional communications configuration for visualization is eliminated. The displays can be configured in the usual fashion with the visualization software and connected to the technological software components. Faster testing, faster commissioning On-line testing and commissioning of the plant goes quickly using the graphical engineering tool. The required testing and diagnostics functions are already integrated. The entire intercommunication of the machine or plant is tested and diagnosed using the graphical information. If you want to make adjustments to the plant during startup, the functions of the individual modules will not be affected in any way - startup is significantly simplified. Instead of changing the logic software of the individual devices and controls, you simply have to optimize the interconnection of the individual modules throughout the system.
