As an independent component, the IE/PB Link PN IO forms the seamless transition between Industrial Ethernet and PROFIBUS by means of real-time (RT) communication and enables existing PROFIBUS devices to be integrated into a PROFINET application. From the viewpoint of the IO controller, all DP slaves are treated as IO devices with an Ethernet interface, i.e. the IE/PB link PN IO is their proxy.
Protection of investment for existing systems and multivendor capability
Existing systems and plant components that communicate via PROFIBUS can continue to be used and expanded in the future as well. Thanks to the seamless expansion of PROFIBUS devices via the IE/PB Link PN IO in PROFINET you can protect your existing investments. In this way you adopt the innovative PROFINET standard while at the same time remaining independent of individual vendors.
Corporate communication from a central location and worldwide access

You can load STEP 7 programs and optimize your plant from a central location. In addition, you have access to process data not only from all corporate levels, but also worldwide access via Industrial Ethernet and Internet.
Cross-network PG/OP communication by means of S7 routing and data record routing (PROFIBUS DP)

Via the IE/PB Link PN IO you can remotely program all S7 stations from the PG on the Industrial Ethernet or PROFIBUS (S7 routing). In addition, you can access all data on S7 stations on the PROFIBUS from the PC on the Industrial Ethernet (e.g. for HMI applications with OPC client interface) using S7 OPC servers. In this way, for example, it is possible to use SIMATIC PDM (on the PC) to parameterize and diagnose a PROFIBUS field device via the IE PB Link PN IO (data record routing).
C-PLUG for safeguarding the configuration data

You can replace a failed device without a PG and without configuration and therefore with minimum effort. You only have to transfer the C-PLUG exchange medium with the backed-up configuration data into the replacement device.
