SCALANCE S security modules

The SCALANCE S security modules are the core of the groundbreaking security concept from Siemens for protecting networks and data. The SCALANCE S protection function controls all data traffic to and from the cell. Like network components, the security modules are simply connected upstream from the devices which are to be protected.

The concept of protecting subnets or automation cells with security modules achieves the following:

Protects devices without in-built security functionality

PLCs are protected without having to possess their own security functions. Equipping all PLCs with their own security functionality is not meaningful from a technical point of view nor is it economical. The cell concept, on the other hand, offers a very efficient way to also protect existing networks.

Simultaneous protection of several devices

Security modules can protect several devices at the same time. This results in lower costs for the user and significantly lower configuration outlay.

Real-time and security

Real-time capability and security are basically contradictory requirements. Every security mechanism must use rules or configurations to check whether certain connections or accesses are permitted or not. This requires time and performance. Within the cell, however, real-time data traffic can occur regardless of security mechanisms.
