PROFIBUS networks can be implemented with different transmission media for the most varied applications.

Electrical networks

Optical data transmission takes place via fiber-optic cables with glass or plastic fibers for interior or exterior application, as ground cable or in halogen-free design.
An optical network in ring, linear bus or star topology can be implemented using the OLM (Optical Link Module) and OBT (Optical Bus Terminal).

Hybrid networks

Hybrid electrical and optical networks are possible. The transition between both media is implemented by the OLM (Optical Link Module).

Wireless coupling

Using the PROFIBUS Infrared Link Module (ILM), individual or multiple PROFIBUS slaves or slave segments can be connected wirelessly. For a maximum transmission rate of 1.5 Mbit/s and a maximum range of 15 m, communication to moving parts, e.g. to automated guided vehicles, and the replacement of systems subject to wear (sliprings or slipconductors) are possible.

Data terminals are connected either via bus terminals or bus connectors. Using repeaters, several bus segments can be switched in series.
