CP 342-5 and CP 342-5 FO

The CP 342-5 communications processor is the cost-optimized communications module of SIMATIC S7-300 and SIMATIC C7 for the PROFIBUS DP bus system.

The difference between the two single-width devices lies in the interface:

• The CP 342-5 has an electrical interface to connect the SIMATIC S7-300, the SINUMERIK 810D powerline / 840D powerline and the SIMATIC C7 to PROFIBUS up to 12 Mbit/s (45.45 kbit/s inclusive)
• The CP 342-5 has an optical interface for plastic and PCF fiber-optic cables to connect the SIMATIC S7-300 and the SIMATIC C7 to PROFIBUS up to 12 Mbit/s (45.45 kbit/s inclusive).
  

Fiber-optic technology is used when

• the environment is subjected to strong electromagnetic fields,
• there are large differences in potential, and
• high transmission rates are required.

Simple programming and configuring via PROFIBUS, cross-network communication between programming devices through S7 routing and module exchange without requiring a programming device are advantages enjoyed by both devices.
Both devices offer the following communications services for the S7-300:

• PROFIBUS DP-V0 (master or slave)
• PG/OP communication (OP multiplexing)
• S7 communication (client, server)
• S5-compatible communication (SEND/RECEIVE)
