Symbols and component blocks
In the diagnostic displays, the status of the components resp. of the subordinate components is visualized
in standardized symbol displays. The components' symbol displays contain:
Graphical representation of the component type
Configured name of the component

Maintenance status indicator

Group display for maintenance messages from subordinate components
By clicking on an element in the symbol display you open either the subordinate hierarchical level or a
component display driver block. This block contains different views of the relevant component in which
more detailed device-specific information are output.
Views. Three standard possibilities
Identification
In this view, in dependence on the component, all data from the hardware configuration or so-called
Identification and Maintenance (I&M) data are displayed directly in the information available for the component.
The I&M data were standardized on a cross-vendor basis by PROFIBUS International (PI). They provide information
on the device manufacturer, Order No., hardware and firmware release, etc.
Advantage to the maintenance engineer: the electronic device identification saves time and ensures independence
from updates of the plant documentation.

Messages
The Message view shows diagnostic fault messages, operator actions and maintenance requests for the selected
component. The view can be switched back and forth between pending and archived messages. The messages have a
special significance, since they ensure the reproducibility of the events and operator actions, creating an
important database for subsequent analyses. This database can be analyzed with the resources familiar from WinCC.
Server-client applications as well as WinCC Web applications are equally possible.
Maintenance
The response from the operator to a maintenance request for the component appears in the Maintenance view.
Maintenance jobs can be requested. In addition, the status of the work can be specified; it will be logged
and signaled in the symbols. A job instruction number and a comment can be entered for each job request.
The job instruction number is entered in the log, and can be used for forwarding to the maintenance
planning department.
Based on the information available in the SIMATIC Maintenance Station for each message and status display,
actions which can be reproduced by the user can be introduced and documented by means of WinCC operator input messages.
This support the maintenance workflow on the one hand while generating a comprehensive database for subsequent plant
optimization to reduce maintenance costs.
SIMATIC Maintenance Station. Advantages at a glance
Identification & Maintenance data are displayed automatically.
Cross-vendor standardization thanks to PROFIBUS International enables the automatic display of I&M data from different manufacturers.
Data need not be collected by hand, but are collected automatically. This saves time and makes errors virtually impossible.
Automatic messages ensure the reproducibility of events and operator actions and are the basis for later analyses.
Access to database is possible via the tried and proven WinCC options: server-client applications, Web applications.
Overview over all pending maintenance jobs enables optimum resource planning.
