High-Tech under the Ground - WinCC employed in the Control and Safety Systems of the Engelberg Tunnel
From the viewpoint of travelers, road tunnels are above all enormous
structures that help avoid long detours and shorten distances. Few notice that
sophisticated control and automation equipment -located behind the spacious
concrete tubes - is employed to ensure trouble-free and smooth operation
around the clock.
As a matter of fact, a multitude of variablesneed to be measured, controlled and regulated. This means that
in both pipes of the Engelberg base tunnel, there are 29 CO sensors, 16
blurred vision test points, 4 NOx sensors, 70 optical smoke detectors, 15
colour cameras, 39 emergency alarms and a large number of other measuring
instruments for the direction of air flow, wind speed, temperature and other
parameters.
