You need a flexible automation architecture to adapt a standard machine to the production environment. New machine modules were developed for an Indian paper manufacturer in no time with a Simotion-based solution. The possibilities of the motion control system were already taken into consideration in the mechanical conception. Since 1954 Phenol and Acetone are produced in the site Gladbeck, Germany. At that time the production started with 8000 t/a Phenol and 5000 t/a Acetone. Meanwhile the production increased because of expansions and improvements to 650,000 t/a Phenol and 400,000 t/a Acetone. Therewith the site in Gladbeck, Germany is the biggest production site worldwide for Phenol. With the additional sites in Antwerp (Belgium) and Mobile (USA) Ineos Phenol is the world biggest producer of Phenol. Schenectady Europe Ltd, located at Four Ashes, near Wolverhampton in England, produces intermediate chemicals for industry. The materials manufactured are used in a wide variety of commercial and industrial applications ranging from automotive products to health care and pharmaceuticals. The site is part of the US owned Schenectady International Group which has 15 affiliated companies world-wide. With about 1200 m/min, converted 72 km/h, the paper races over the rollers, waltzers and winders. To avoid the web tearing at this speed and to guarantee a consistent paper quality, the drives of the new paper machine of the paper and cardboard factory Varel GmbH & Co KG must bring top performance. The new Siemens drive series Sinamics takes over all drive jobs as a homogeneous solution in the paper machine and therefore meets the high requirements. A modern motor management system is distinguished by the fact that it contains a number of service functions in addition to extensive protection, control and monitoring functions. BP Marl is therefore converting all its pump drives in the Cumol production to Simocode pro. In connection with a new process control system this increases the plant transparency and availability considerably. The cellulose factory UPM Kymmene Kaukaa converted all the graphic operating devices to Simatic WinCC flexible last year. With the conversion function from Simatic ProTool the applications were easily translated into the WinCC flexible format. The commissioning also went off without any problems. In the bale press the remote control of operating devices was converted locally with the innovative option WinCC flexible Sm@rtService.
