Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) has developed a new range of three-phase asynchronous motors for the NAFTA zone. The new generation of NEMA motors (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) will be offered initially in sizes 140 to 250 and ratings between 1 and 20 HP (horse power). The new motors are surface-cooled and designed with degree of protection IP 54/IP 55.
The new motors from Siemens are available in both aluminum and gray cast iron housings. The versions in lightweight aluminum are designed for general-purpose (GP) applications such as those found in the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) sector. Motors in the full gray cast iron housings are known as severe duty (SD) versions and fulfill requirements for use under harsh environmental conditions such as those found in the paper industry. With its high efficiency values, motor version SD100IEEE841 exceeds even the IEEE841 standards for use in the mineral oil and chemicals industries.
A special feature of the new NEMA generation of motors are the versions with copper die-cast rotor and consequently increased efficiency over and above the requirements of the NEMA Premium standard. Copper die-cast rotors reduce power losses at low overall length. This version's reduced energy consumption also decreases the motor's life-cycle costs. Savings in energy costs and the amortization period can be calculated with the energy saving program SinaSave 2.0.
The motors can be easily adapted to their location of use in a plant or machine. The floor mounts of the general-purpose aluminum series are screwed and can thus be attached to the housing in 90-degree steps. The terminal box of the gray cast iron motor series is centered. Together with the 8-hole floor mounts, this allows conversion from F1 (shaft on the right) to F2 (shaft on the left). The motors are easy to modify and this enables flexible use and reduces storage costs both for the mechanical equipment manufacturer and for the user when it comes to service and maintenance work.
