The sorting plant at Bier Schneider in Dortmund, Germany with its extended
dimensions of approx. 60 x 30 m, is currently the largest plant of its kind
in Germany. The distributed configuration of sensor technology and pneumatics
in the plant represents a classic model for the conveying industry.
No bottlenecks thanks to distributed sensor technology
A large number of optical sensors, widely distributed within the plant ensure
that operation is not held up by bottlenecks. Approx. 100 digital AS Interface
modules, with 4 inputs each, link the signals of the sensors to the control system.
At the same time, the AS Interface flat conductor supplies these optical sensors
with the necessary power. This not only results in a considerable reduction
in signal cabling, from a multitude of parallel cables to a single bus line,
but there is also no further need for additional 24V supply lines to the sensors.
Reduction of pneumatic actuators
The cylinders required for the conveyor belts are widely distributed in this
plant. Ideal conditions for implementation of the distributed AS Interface K60
pneumatic modules. The valve as pneumatic output and the answer signal of the
cylinder positions as digital input are integrated in this I/O module at the
AS Interface. And, above all – it is only installed where a cylinder is operating,
that means 100% utilization of capacity!
Resultant short connection: The cylinder operates faster!
The short connection between the valve and the cylinder, due to the distributed
configuration, also directly influences the plant cycle: there is no need for
a large pressure buffer to build up during switching, so the cylinders operate
faster than when subject to longer connection routes from a central island.
