Conveying Systems at VW Wolfsburg in Germany
Smooth Wheel Rim Transports Thanks to AS-Interface

| Everything runs smoothly with
AS Interface: the new conveyor section for rims at VW Wolfsburg, Germany. |

Distributed motor starter concept reduces required control cabinet volume
by 60%!
An everyday occurrence at VW Wolfsburg: hour after hour, hundreds of wheel rims
on their way to the welding unit travel along the new 400 meter long conveyor
section made by Wegener+Stapel of Bergen, Germany. To enable easy adjustment
to varying rim demand, the new conveyor system needed to be of flexible design.
And as far as flexibility is concerned, AS Interface meets these requirements
perfectly.
Consistent distribution – reasons and advantages:
14 AS Interface masters in the
conveyor section ensure that the VW rims get to where they're needed just in
time for further assembly.
46 AS Interface compact starters look after the drive.
As a result of the distributed design, the motor starters are
fed by a local power bus, thus minimizing the length of the motor line to the
switching device.
The distributed design reduces
the required control cabinet volume by 60%.
The motors can be started and tested in manual mode, independent
of PLC.
Saves time on documentation: hardly any cable connection plans
required.
"AS Interface not only
makes commissioning easier but more economic, too. We were able to put the conveyor
section into operation bit by bit and integrate it in the manufacturing process
without once interrupting rim production."
