Johnson Controls, Geel (Belgium): Just-in-time to greater productivity

At its plant in Geel, Johnson Controls runs just-in-time production of vehicle seats for the Opel Astra and the VW Golf and Polo models. When it came time to double the manufacturing capacity of the factory, the automotive supplier saw an opportunity to boost productivity.
The company decided to modernize an existing line and install a completely new line, and to complete both projects without hindering ongoing production. That’s why Johnson Controls chose Siemens as its automation partner. For the production lines, we installed SIMATIC S7-412 2DP controllers based on the Totally Integrated Automation platform. SIMATIC ET 200 eco modules were installed for the suppliers working under the roof of Johnson Controls to integrate them and create a comprehensive Ethernet network. These modules are used to control and visualize the processes and make the connection to the MES level. They also enable central recording of the data from the MOBY-E RFID tags, which is important for ensuring the traceability of safety-related components such as airbags.
The new line was put into production only eight months after the project started, and the modernized line followed after another four months. Since then, Johnson Controls has been producing 100% more vehicle seats with just 50% more personnel. |
