The SCALANCE X400 Industrial Ethernet switch, media modules and extender
modules are now available!
The SCALANCE X-400 industrial Ethernet switch is for
application within high performance networks. The X400 extends the Siemens
Industrial switch portfolio from the control level switches (SCALANCE
X-100 & X-200, OSM/ESM) into the upper performance enterprise segment.
The X400 is flexible in application due to its modular design whereby
optional media modules for fiber optic connection and optional extension
modules for increased numbers of ports can be plugged into the base X400
switch. High performance networks (Gigabit Ethernet) and the ability
to integrate into office style enterprise networks (office standards)
are supported.

Features
Base switch
The mechanical design of the X400 is similar to the SIMATIC S7-300
format, for space-saving mounting in a cubicle or switchboard. Mounting
is on a standard 35mm rail or a S7-300 mounting rail.
The base X400 switch is subdivided into 9 functional slots:
The first three slots are occupied by the redundant power supply (2 x 24VDC)
with a fault signalling contact, eight digital inputs (that can be used to
trigger functions and are accessible via SNMP) and the switch CPU.
The next slot has two integrated Gigabit Ethernet twisted pair ports
(10,100 or 1000 Mbit/s) which can optionally be equipped with fibre optic
Gigabit media modules to provide either electrical or fibre ring topologies.
The next two slots can be optionally equipped with fibre optic fast
Ethernet media modules to provide more optical connections to the base
switch.
The remaining
three slots each contain four fast Ethernet twisted pair ports (10/100
Mbit/s) each of which has strain relief sleeves which when used with
PROFINET compliant Industrial Ethernet connectors eg. FastConnect RJ45
Plug 180, provides improved tensile and bending force resistance (from
the connected data cables) in comparison with standard RJ45 connectors.
Extender modules for switch expansion
The base switch can be optionally expanded with one of the two following
extender modules:
- EM495-8 providing a total of 8 fast Ethernet twisted pair ports
(10/100Mbit/s) arranged in 2 slots with 4 ports each all with strain
relief sleeves.
- EM496-4 providing four fast Ethernet media module slots for optional
insertion of fibre optic media modules (max 8 fibre optic ports).
The maximum port count of the X400 when expanded is 26 ports (of which
14 can be optical).
Media modules for fibre optic connection
For connection to fibre optic cabling, the following media modules
are available:
Gigabit
Media Modules MM492-2 and MM492-2LD
For the design of optical Gigabit Ethernet rings, the two twisted pair Gigabit
Ethernet ports integrated in the base X400 switch can be converted to fibre
optic by mains of a 2 port Gigabit Ethernet media module. Multimode MM492-2
(max. length 750m) and single-mode MM492-2LD (max. length 10km) are available.
Fast Ethernet Media Modules MM491-2 and MM491-2LD
By using the 2 port fast Ethernet media module, multimode MM491-2 (max. length
3km) or single-mode MM491-2LD (max. length 26km), the base X400 switch can
be integrated in optical rings with SCALANCE X-200 or OSM/ESM or connected
to individual terminal devices via fibre optics. Up to 2 Fast Ethernet media
modules can be plugged into the base X400 switch and 4 additional media modules
can be plugged into the EM496-4 extender module.
Software functions
- The integrated Redundancy Manager provides quick media redundancy
even for large networks, both for Gigabit Ethernet (SCALANCE X414-3E
in a ring) and for Fast Ethernet (SCALANCE X400 in a ring in combination
with SCALANCE X-200 or OSM/ESM).
- Remote diagnostics via Web Browser, SNMP or TELNET.
- SCALANCE X400 permits the construction of so-called virtual networks
(VLAN). Here, a number of "logic" Industrial Ethernet networks
can be run on a single physical network (separate load and address
areas, access protection and prioritisation between groups of subscribers).
- Support of the Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) the standardised
office network redundancy mechanism that permits a redundant connection
to higher level enterprise networks.
- Multicast data streams that occur in the case of speech or video
applications are identified by the switch and the overall network load
can be limited by filtering.
- With the SCALANCE X400, the configuration data is automatically
saved on a memory card (C-PLUG) included with the base switch. In the
event of a device failure, the C-PLUG only needs to be plugged into
the replacement device and the X400 has the same configuration as the
device that was removed.
