The SCALANCE W family of Industrial Wireless LAN product are now available!

SCALANCE is a new Industrial Ethernet networking components family from SIMATIC NET. The family is divided into sub-families, SCALANCE X – switches, SCALANCE W- wireless and SCALANCE S – security.

SCALANCE W

The SCALANCE W line is made up of the following Industrial Wireless LAN components:

• Access Points : Single (W788-1PRO) and Dual (W788-2PRO).
• Client modules : PC card (CP7515) and generic client module (W744-1PRO)
• Accessories : Antennas & Power Supplies.

SCALANCE W788-1PRO Single Access Point

The SCALANCE W788-1PRO Access Point enables the establishment of very reliable wireless networks with approval in the license-free ISM bands at 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. The device supports IWLAN which is an extension of the IEEE 802.11a/b/g standards with up to 54 Mbit/s (in Turbo Mode up to 108 Mbit/s).

W788-1PRO has a robust IP65 metal casing design permitting installations in rough industrial environments, where office products are unsuitable. Ambient temperature range of –20°C to +60°C and resistance against condensation also permits outdoor use.

The SCALANCE W-700 products are supplied complete with radio module and antennas 2x ANT795-4MR (Omni-directional). These antennas can be optionally replaced with pole mounted omni-directional or directional variants providing increased range coverage.

Powering of W-700 devices can be achieved via a variety of mechanisms:

• Power-over-Ethernet acc. to IEEE 802.3af, with vibration-resistant IE Hybrid connector (included)
• 24V DC voltage supply and Industrial Ethernet connection via the IE FC Standard Cable  4x2 with FastConnect Modular Outlet with Power Insert*
• M12 connector (18-57VDC)
• In conjunction with power supply PS791-1PRO (for 100-240V AC supply)
  

Modes of operation:

The W788-1PRO supports two modes of operation: Infrastructure & Point-to-Point.

In infrastructure mode, network subscribers can move between access points (roaming) with complete application transparency.

Point-to-point mode, provides the capability of coupling two ethernet wired networks with a radio link (ideal when cables are difficult to install). Up to eight point-to-point connections can run simultaneously.

IWLAN:

Industrial Wireless LAN (IWLAN) is an extension of the well-known Wireless LAN standard acc. to IEEE 802.11, whereby full compatibility with IEEE is ensured.

The following additional functions are available:

• data transmission rate reservation for selected subscribers to provide deterministic access to the wireless medium and to calculate the max. transmission times
• cyclic monitoring of the radio connection between access point and subscriber to quickly detect fault conditions
• redundancy mechanisms for reliable radio infrastructure
• forced roaming (in case of wire break, forcing access point switch for subscribers)

Mounting:
The SCALANCE W-700 products can be mounted on a wall or a ceiling, provided the antenna is aligned correctly. Mounting on standard DIN-mounting rails is not possible. 

Use in Ex areas 
The SCALANCE W-700 products and the PS791-1PRO power supply can be used in Zone 2 GP IIC T4 areas, if they are mounted in a cubicle. 

C-PLUG

There is a lockable receptacle on the rear side of the unit for the optional C-PLUG (configuration plug). This allows easy replacement of the access point by simply transferring the configuration data and operation settings with the C-PLUG. No programming device is required in this case.

SCALANCE W788-2PRO Dual Access Point

The SCALANCE W788-2PRO Dual Access Point has all the features of the W788-1PRO but with 2 Access Points integrated in a single housing.

This allows the implementation of many cost-effective applications. Examples are:

• Wireless backbone - multiple point-to-point connections between dual access points as well as a local radio cell at each respective Dual Access Point.
• the two radio interfaces are operated in point-to-point mode provide the capability for a redundant wireless network (implementation of redundant paths with Spanning Tree). If a fault occurs on one connection, the wireless network will find a redundant path automatically. This ensures a high degree of operational security.
• "Redundancy Mode" where two ethernet segments are coupled and the data streams of both radio cards are transmitted in parallel. If the user selects the 2.4 GHz frequency band for one card and the 5 GHz band for the other, a wireless connection with maximum reliability is established.  

SCALANCE W744-1PRO Client Module

The SCALANCE W744-1PRO Ethernet Client Module establishes a wireless link between a device (eg. PLC) with an Ethernet interface and the wireless network. SCALANCE W744-1PRO and SCALANCE W788 access points have identical housing dimensions and connections, but differ in their function: SCALANCE W788-1PRO implements the wireless network in which SCALANCE W744-1PRO is able to connect to and move within. The Ethernet Client Module is transferred automatically and transparently to the application from one Access Point to the other (Roaming).
In addition to this operating mode, SCALANCE W744-1PRO offers the possibility of Ad-hoc operation, allowing a simple wireless connection between two wireless devices. One SCALANCE W744-1PRO can communicate with another SCALANCE W744-1PRO, or with a radio card (e.g. CP 7515), in ad-hoc mode.

CP7515 PC card

The CP7515 is a PC card for operation in a wireless network acc. to IEEE 802.11a/b/g, with up to 54 Mbit/s (up to 108 Mbit/s with Turbo Mode) at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. A CP7515 is plugged into the 32-bit CardBus slot of an Internet Pad or PC.

This enables the mobile device to move freely within the radio cell and exchange data with other subscribers. The functionality of the CP7515 in combination with other vendor products has been confirmed by Wi-Fi compliance (Wireless Fidelity).

The CP7515 permits a transmission of data in conformity with IEEE 802.11a/b/g as well as IWLAN as described above. For these additional IWLAN functions, the SCALANCE W700 access points are required. The CP 7515 can be used both in industrial (IWLAN) and in office environments.

POWER SUPPLY PS791-1PRO

The PS791-1PRO Power Supply is an AC/DC supply for SCALANCE W-700 and SCALANCE X-200 products. It can be mounted directly on the SCALANCE devices, but also on a wall or a standard mounting rail (DIN or S7-300). The sturdy metal housing provides IP65 protection as well as an ambient temperature range of -20°C to +60°C and immunity against condensation for suitability in outdoor installations. The scope of supply includes a connector for the AC supply. For the 24VDC connection either the Power Cord M12 must be used (for connection to SCALANCE) or a Power M12 Plug pro which is pre-assembled.

ANTENNA VARIANTS AND ACCESSORIES

The ANT795-4MR and ANT795-6MR are omni-directional antenna. Both antennas have an opening angle of 30° and similar gains. The ANT795-4MR antenna (included in supply of W700 products) is mounted directly on the housing, whereas the ANT795-6MR can be mounted remotely and connected by means of a cable (5 metre) attached to the antenna. ANT795-6MR can be mounted to a wall or a pole by means of the included mounting accessories. Both antennas can be used at 2.4 GHz and at 5 GHz .
The ANT793-8DR antenna is a directional antenna with an opening angle of 20°. This antenna has a very high gain and has a fixed-mounted antenna cable (5 metres). It can be wall or a pole mounted by means of the included mounting accessories. The ANT793-8DR is normally used as a single antenna together with SCALANCE W-700 (because antenna diversity is not used together with directional antennas) and in this case the included antenna terminating resistor TI795-1R must be installed on the SCALANCE W-700 unit. If the 5 metre cable attached to the antenna is too short, the Antenna Extension Cable can be used to provide an additional 5 metre cable extension. All antenna cables are flame protected, chemically resistive and Silicone and Halogen free. If the products are used in outdoor areas, LP791-1PRO can be used for lightning protection.
