| Higher performance Simatic Rack PC with the latest processor generation | | Perfect in industrial applications | The combination of several computer-intensive automation tasks such as metrology and industrial image processing on one hardware platform is dependent on fast, efficient industrial PCs which can process as many applications as possible side by side close to real time. The Simatic Rack PC 847B is equipped with the latest Intel Core2 Duo processors, the latest chip set and memory technology and a wide variety of interfaces for these tasks.
The new Rack PC is distinguished by a high system performance which enables even the most demanding computing and visualization tasks. By real parallel computing on two independent processor cores, the new Rack PC is more than 100 % more efficient than its predecessor with Intel Pentium 4 processor. Thanks to the latest Intel Dual Core technology, several applications or operating systems such as Windows XP and the real time operating system RMOS can run simultaneously. In addition, the Core2 Duo processors with 34 W have a low power consumption so that a processor fan could also be omitted from the industrial PC.
Another gain in performance is offered by the Front-Side-Bus (FSB) with 667 MHz and the fast Intel-946GM express chip set. Efficient 80 or 160 GByte serial ATA hard disks (SATA) with a data transmission rate of 150 MB/s optimize and accelerate the management of write and read processes. The Intel GMA 950 Express (Graphics Media Accelerator) graphic controller integrated in the chip set, especially, ensures a fast image build-up and impressive visualizations. As a future-safe platform, the Rack PC 847B is also being prepared already for future 64-bit applications.
High flexibility for automation solutions
The Rack PC is equipped with a very large number of interfaces for high automation flexibility. Up to eleven PCI/PCI Express slots offer a lot of room for extensions such as measuring cards or frame grabbers. The PCI Express x4 and the PCI-Express x16 slots increase the performance and ensure fast access to the I/O peripheral devices. Connection of distributed field devices or to the Simatic S7 is possible with the optional Profibus interface. Process and production data but also remote maintenance data can be transferred quickly to a control room or service station in a network group via the two integrated Ethernet interfaces. A total of six High-Speed USB-2.0 interfaces enable fast data archiving on external drives and offer extensive communication possibilities with the external periphery.
More robustness in the harsh industrial environment
The robust 19" full metal housing and high quality components with high MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) form the basis for reliable 24-hour operation under industrial ambient conditions and the high electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Stable operation at full processor performance is ensured without throttling the processor by optimum positioning of all components in the housing for cooling of the relevant components. Sensor-controlled, ball bearing fans ensure trouble-free operation of the PC at ambient temperatures up to 50°C and prevent thermal overloading of the components. In addition, an active overpressure venting concept and easy-change filters protect the sensitive components against penetration by dust.
User friendly with reduced engineering effort
Thanks to its compact installation dimensions, the 19-inch Rack PC can be installed horizontally or vertically in standard switch cabinets with a width of 500 mm without additional measures. For fast commissioning it is available with the pre-installed, multilingual and activated operating systems Windows 2000, XP Professional or Server 2003. The device structure is also service-friendly. For example, the front side dust filter and fan can be changed in the installed state without tools. Opening of the housing cover with only one screw allows easy installation and removal of extension modules and fast changing of PC components.
Increased system availability due to high data security
To avoid potential failures, the Rack PC has an integrated diagnostic and alarm function for temperature, fan, hard disks and watchdog. These are supported by a front LED concept for efficient self-diagnosis such as monitoring of the hard disks in RAID1 configuration or a status display for Ethernet or Profibus. Entered data can be monitored and early warning of imminent faults given by the optional software Simatic PC DiagMonitor. The integration of these alarms and data in a software PLC such as Simatic WinAC or a SCADA system like Simatic WinCC is guaranteed by integration via the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), via OPC or via Web server. With RAID1 reflection plate configuration and hot-swap interchangeable frames, the hard disks can be changed during operation and therefore ensure high system availability and data security. The RAID controller is integrated onboard in the Intel chip set and therefore occupies no PCI slot.
