Get together for Italian lifestyle… Amaro Ramazzotti - MES Solution with SIMATIC IT

A tracking system implemented at Pernod Ricard

The company’s aim was to fully integrate all the standard operating procedures in the factory and, at the same time, respect the market regulations and consumer requirements. Siemens implemented with SIMATIC IT an MES solution at Pernod Ricard Italia that allows for the collection of product data from production to consumer. As a result, the quality of the Tracking & Tracing information improved remarkably by confirming Pernod Ricard‘s outstanding image worldwide. Furthermore, the system enables  Pernod Ricard Italia to completely track and trace the picking and shipping operations.
The customer
The Pernod Ricard group is the world’s no. 2 in wines and spirits. Headquartered in Milan, the production plant of Pernod Ricard Italia is in Canelli. This plant has three bottling lines for wines and two bottling lines for spirits such as Amaro Ramazzotti and Sambuca Ramazzotti.
The total production is about 41,000 bottles per hour. The plant employs 57 people, Pernod Ricard all in all has 17,600 employees worldwide.

The business challenge
The main driver of the project was the EU regulation concerning the traceability of goods in the food market (EC 178/2002).
The tracking of products is closely connected to the quality and, thus, to the external image of the manufacturer. The collection of data about the products, from production till their final destination, is the decisive factor for smooth recall procedures in case needed. The main objective that Pernod Ricard wanted to achieve with the automation of the product identification was to optimize the management of related quality data and to monitor their shifting in the supply chain.
In particular, the company needed to have complete visibility of the products stocked inside the plant but also in the warehouses that are managed by external companies. The main demands made on the system were the integration of all the standard operating procedures in the company, including the integration of AS400 ERP and specific HMI, and, at the same time, meeting the standards and regulations in the market.

The solution
The project realized for Pernod Ricard Italia consisted of a tracking solution including pallet labeling in the factory, tracking product transport from the factory to external warehouses, the material management in the warehouses, and tracking the shipping data from the external warehouses to the final customers. The solution was carried out with SIMATIC IT Production Suite and the library of its Siemens partner I&S named Track-It covering all areas to provide end-to-end Tracking & Tracing.
Overall Tracking & Tracing with SIMATIC IT
T he system allows for pallet labeling on two sides of the pallet. It provides a readability check of the barcode and an automatic SSCC and batch code generation. The system is GS1-128- compliant (a regulation establishing a standard way of labeling a package).
Furthermore, the pallet database is updated in real time.
Other features include user-friendly administration of the quality status, a flexible stock query system, and reliable picking even with mixed pallets. Shipping orders are automatically acquired from ERP. In the operative phase, the pallet is automatically linked to its destination by scanning the labels. A plausibility check is automatically performed. All parties involved receive the information they need in processed form, from Tracking & Tracing, inventory and shipping reports to production reports for one shift, for one day, or for one week.
The implementation of SIMATIC IT
The project implementation took about one year and was divided into three phases: first, the installation of the production management in Canelli factory and of the master system in Milan; second, the installation of shipping procedures in Canelli and the integration into the master system; and third, the rollout of the system in external warehouse facilities. The project concluded positively with high satisfaction of the customer. The good result was in part caused by the preliminary feasibility study which, preceding the economical technical proposal, allowed Siemens to identify and quantify all the requirements of Pernod Ricard in detail.

The pay-off
The main reasons that prompted Pernod Ricard to decide for SIMATIC IT were its scalability, the compliance with ISA 95, the easy integration of new functions, the product standardization, and, of course, the reduced total cost of ownership.
Furthermore, with the implementation of SIMATIC IT, the customer’s image in the market got confirmed, also thanks to a more reliable and faster data availability.
The system provides Amaro Ramazzotti and the other Pernod Ricard Italia brands with overall procedure control and allows for the complete traceability of picking and shipping operations.
