Hello,
I use a similar configuration: WinXP in VMware with WinXP as host.

Did you connect the USB-Adapter to the virtual machine?

Maybe ist's a "unknown device" or "common USB device" on your host.
On top of the guest-window you can select the USB-Devices to be connected to the guest.
After connecting it to the guest, it must identify it as "SIMATIC USB-Adapter" (I don't know the exact name)

Yes you need a driver (at least in the virtual machine)
It is included in STEP 7 V5.5 and in STEP 7 V5.x (exept V5.5) you need this driver.

PS: In the PCT Package (Free download for IO-Link) is the same file "SIMATIC Device Drivers.msi" included as in STEP 7 V5.5. So I expect, when you install this, you will get the actual driver for your USB Adaptern (But I don't know!) Rnf:lblSmileyTooltip_ think

In the attachment you can see the PC Adapter USB works (with XP as host, VMware, XP as guest and STEP 7 V5.5.)

I had the same problem. I could not install CP5711 as there was a higher version already installed on my computer and it would not allow me to proceed.
What I did to solve the problem are as below:
- Opened the device manager in main windows(not virtual).
- Connected the MPI to see what device is added to the list. It was Simatic PC Adapter USB.(there was a yellow mark next to it!
- Checked the device manager in virtual windows (win xp) and couldn't find the device.
- On the top menu of virtual windows, right clicked on the USB icon and selected " Connect to the host"
- checked the device manager in virtual machine again and found the SIMATIC PC Adapter this time.(there was no yellow sign next to it)
- opened the simatic manager, set the right PC-PG interface.(PCAdapter(MPI) and USB connection)
it worked!
