Hi,

I am having some troubles with the ss52load program in order to download the profibus configuration of my EXM448-1 (Some colleagues have the same problem with the Profibus board of the TDC) that I have made with COM PROFIBUS.

The laptop we have sell to our client has no integrated serial port. So we decided to use a USB converter. This USB converter is installed defaultly on COM4, as COM1 to COM3 are somehow used by the computer.

Ss52load wants only to use COM1 or COM2. Of course I can't use it ...

I was wondering if I can use Hyperterminal instead of SS52load but i don't know the communication caracteristics (baud rate, parity,...)

Is there an other way to download the profibus configuration? With a CP5511 card I succeed to download it if the configuration file has been already downloaded with the serial cable.  For the first loading, it doesn't work at all...

Thanks for answering,

Kramps.

Hello,
please try the following:

Open the serial port COM1 or COM2 and try to set it to an other com port number, e.g. COM4
Then change the usb-serial-port to COM1 or COM 2

To change the COM number follow this steps:
- open the control panel, system (or device manager?)  and there ports.
- select communications port (COMx)  and properties
- select the page port properties and the button extended (or extra?)

Ok, I already tried this but when I am forcing to COM1 address. The download doesn't work. I think there is a conflict and that i can't force it. See in the following picture. (It says that the port is in use in french. We can also see that no other port is used in COM2 or COM3.

Here it is for my personnal laptop (HP) which has already a integrated serial port. But i have exactly the same problem with the other laptop (IBM).

First set the port who is actually COM1 to COMx (maybe you have to reboot).
Then set you USB-serial interface to COM1

You may habe to deactivate Modems Cardreaders or any other equipment that may use COM1 or COM2

OK.

I tried to desactivate all Modems and Card Readers in my PC and I finally succeeded to free the "COM2" address for my USB->Serial Converter but I have the same results: a timeout fault occurs when i am trying to download the program into the Profibus port.

I tried with two types of converter, same result cry

Have you got any USB converter which are certified to work with COM PROFIBUS ? Is it possible to use the CP5511 card using RS485 instead of RS232 ?

Hello,

maybe your EXM458 is damaged?

If I remember right you can transfer the configuration via Profibus too:

At the central comm. block ( @PRO ?) you have to define Baudrate and Address
At your PC some drivers have to be loaded to activate the CP (don't ask me for more details)
Connect your CP and the EXM448 via PB cable
In COMPROFIBUS you must select somesthink like Transfer, DP-Master
Then you can transfer the configuration

kind regards
Dirk

No, my EXM448 is not damaged as I succeeded to download the profibus port configuration with a PC with an integrated serial port.

The problem is clearly coming from the adapter. To my opinion, ss52load doesn't use the standard Windows functions to access to serial port but rather use a direct access to the serial port registers. Ss52load is a very old program.

These kind of program can not work with an USB adapter. From what I read, this problem can be resolved by using a PCMCIA adapter, which is much more expensive.

Concerning the use of the CP5611, I am quite disappointed we can't find any documentation anywhere concerning the use of this card with COM Profibus.

In the SYMADYN D (same hardware as in the EXM448 card) documentation, there is the following description :

To operate the SS52 as master, a COM database must be generated, using
the COM PROFIBUS (or COM ET200) program, and loaded into the SS52.
The program runs on a PC under Windows.
The database is loaded into the SS52 via
• PROFIBUS
(with PC PROFIBUS card CP5411, CP5511 or
MPI card or interface)
• COM1/2 interface of the PC and RS 232 parameterizing/diagnostics
interface of the SS52 with „SS52load“ driver program.
COM PROFIBUS must also be ordered if SS52 is configured as master:
Order No.: 6ES5 895-6SE12 (German)
The driver program SS52load is included in COM PROFIBUS from V3.1 or
can be obtained at no charge from Siemens via the Intranet:
ftp://www.erlf80.asi.siemens.de/SIMADYN_D/html/treiber.htm

I am disappointed we can't find a clear description anywhere for the use of the CP5511 with COM PROFIBUS, as the serial port is becoming more and more rare on today's PCs.

Can you try PCMCIA->COM adapter?
Sometimes USB->COM works incorrectly, this may depend on different reasons. I use 2 adapters (PCMCIA and USB) if I need connection to RS232 and sometimes both of them work with errors or even do not work.
I think that unfortunately nobody can say will it work or not for your case, you can only try.
Best regards.
