Late last year we had a siemens rep spec out a system for us. It consisted of an S7-1200 with a profibus communication module (which has been purchased) one CU305 DP for Servo control. and three CU240S DP's for vector control. We have not purchased the drive systems yet. Although we have purchased the power modules. I now come to find out that the entire CU240S line has been discontinued.

Also, a bit about the motors:
1 Servo - Siemens 1FK7042 Drive Click Encoder 1024(i think)
2 Nord Gear Motors - 2 HP 440VAC - 1024 Incremental Encoder
1 Nord Gear Motor - 1 HP 440VAC -  1024 Incremental Encoder

Now there is a replacement, which is the CU240E-2. However, it does not include an encoder input. So my ownly other option would be to use four CU305's. However, it adds 600 dollars per machine. and we have a total of 4 machines to retrofit. Which then adds $2,400 for the entire project.

So, the question being, is there another drive system/setup that would be more cost effective than having to use four 305's. Now, I probally can return the PM's but not the PLC's. (the PLC's were purchased a long time ago now)

I've looked into using a CU320, but after the controller, line module, and drive modules, plus an S7-300 and TIA V11 Proff. The cost gets way to high.

Then I looked at doing a D425, but same issue, plus have to then add three SM modules for the encoder evaluation from the third party motors to the drive units. So again, the price gets far to out of control.

So I hope theres someone out there who knows more than I do!
Thanks in advanced!

Hello SebOber,

Unfortunately as products develop and become replaced by other products there are some challenges for both customers and product manufacturers.

In this case, I encourage you to have a follow-up discussion with the Siemens representatives (distributor?) to possibly identify a more attractive approach to this application.

I am also asking your local Siemens sales contacts to contact you directly.

Hello,

does your application needs an encoder evaluation really? For example with the new CU230-2 there is a new Vector model inside, where you can start in closed loop Vector control at zero speed. But then the motor data`s have to fit and only for passive loads.
But also with the normal modell change over at approx. 10% of nominal speed you would get much better results as with CU240S in sensorless mode. Maybe you can test it on your machine?

-=Solved=-

I spoke with my Siemens rep and as i expected I do have to go with the CU305.
