With Siemens equipment I would never say 'the only way' because there is normaly a few ways to do things.  I personally find I can't be bothered to read and understand all the documentation to use Siemens HMI products so I'd rather write my own. There is a range of standard commands for the network connection starting with _tcp When you open the comms you simply specifiy a free port and an IP address. The controller doesn't care where the IP is located so it could be direct or over a lan. The data is sent and received as an array which then has to be processed to move the data into variables. Pee
