Sinumerik 840C Duplicating the Harddrive

(0)  Hi: Can I copy the harddrive by pulling it out from the MMC CPU board plugging it to a USB harddrive adapter and make an image of the disk with Windows softwares like Norton Ghost or TrueImage.  Will it corrupt the Siemens harddrive because I know that Windows sometimes will create files on a drive that it detects  like Recyle Bin without you knowing it. If not should I copy the hard drive under a DOS environment ? Is this possible ?  What is the recommended software.  I have another spare drive with the same specs.  I want to have a backup drive in case of harddrive failure Thanks for any help Rgds Robert
