Hi laugh
Maybe someone will know.. At university I deal with modern control theory: Self-tuning controllers (autotuning controllers), LQR control, LQG control, robust and predictive control. I am also interested in fuzzy logic control and control with neuronal networks implemented. And I want to know implementations to the PLCs Siemens. I have found "Advanced Process Control" on it4industry.com site. There are descriptions of fuzzy control++ and neuro systems solutions. Then I have found and used self-tunning controllers blocks (FB51, self tuner in FB58 ..). I want to ask if there are any other solutions of this topics ?? If Siemens works on some kind of expert system or blocks for robust or predictive control or some solution for linear quadratic control exists..... The questions about Matlab belongs to this topics too. Is there any solution for connection or communication between Matlab and PLC ? (OPC, ethernet and so on) ?

Thanks a lot for your answers

Georgio

Hi Georgio,

MPC 4x4 (4 input values, 4 output values) model predictive controller is included in the PCS7 engineering system as of version 7 (part of the APC package), fuzzy logic and neural networks are available as add-on components. All these components basically run in the PLC and are therefor only suitable for use with PCS7.
On top of these siemens products, the PCS7 add on catalog also proposes MPC controllers and soft sensors developed by IPCOS. These are high end products and usually require IPCOS consultants to model the process and design the appropriate multivariable controller or soft sensors. These components run on seperate computers and interact with the PLC trough OPC, they are basically vendor independent as OPC is an open standard most vendos support.
Good luck

Hi dmertens.

I have studied some information about MPC since I posted my question one year ago.
It seems to be very interesting area of modern control application. MPC controllers and MPC solutions are only one advanced process control solutions that can be widely used and are implemented directly in PLC... Many of PLC producers offers this kind of control (Siemens, ABB, Rockwell, Honeywell and others). Many of others advanced process control solutions are implemented on PC on higher control level and communicate with PLC.
Ufortunatelly I have no opportunity to meet any application with MPC in practice. But I hope I will have a opportunity to be close to some industry MPC application in the future.

If anybody has some other interesting and want to share, please you can post here.

Thanks
Georgio
