Hello,

I'm currently in the process of retrofitting an older vision cell for a new part. The cell has a Siemens Touch Panel 170B Color HMI. I have WinCC flexible 2008 software.

My question is do I need to by a proprietary cable to program this screen or can I use a usb to serial adaptor and a regular rs-232 cable?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello joemckibben,

Please have a look at the following link:
What transfer options are available in the various operator panels?

and

how can you transfer a WinCC flexible project serially to a panel?

Best regards,

Wizard

Ok thanks for the info Wizard.

Just to make sure I understand correctly, I can use RS-232 I just need to use a laptop that has a com port on it?

Hello joemckibben,

Yes, it is recommended to use a Laptop with real COM port. blush

Perhaps an USB/RS232 convertor will work, but it is not garantueed.

Best regards,

Wizard

But would a USB/MPI cable be my best option? Are they all the same? Or will any do? I didn't see an actual part# for one.

Hello,

Have a look here:
how can you transfer a WinCC flexible project via MPI/PROFIBUS to a Windows-based panel?
first note: PC-adapter (USB or RS232) are not supported.

Although it sometimes does work. blush

Hello Wizard,

I can confirm that it works with KTP panels all the time.
