It will help, if you tell us the context.

So I only can gess:
The S7 knows Floating point numbers (REAL in S7) and (nonfloating) Integer numbers (INT in S7)

A floating signal is a signal that has no grounded reference where a non-floating signal either gas the + or the - connected to the ground. A floating signal has the advantage that an eart fault does not cause any interruption but the signal simply becomes non-floating. In order to prevent short circuits, the earth faults are detected by special equipment and alarmed so that the problem can be fixed before a second earth fault occurs.
